HILL TOP

A dramatic site is often best complemented by bold architecture. And a hilltop location, such as this, is a prime example.

The landmark homestead on Te Mata Peak in Hawke's Bay is positioned to take advantage of the panoramic views. Sweeping curves, extensive covered terraces, and formal stairs leading to a swimming pool enhance a sense of grandeur. But the design also provides for a relaxed New Zealand lifestyle, with bifold doors opening to the terraces from the main living areas and bedrooms.

Curves are a dominant feature inside as well as outside - there are curved windows and a curved staircase in the grand entrance foyer. The atrium features a wrought iron balustrade with a pattern of grapes and vine leaves.

Much of the interior decor is complemented by the dramatic scenery. As well as full-height windows throughout the house, a series of small windows at the top of the stairwell frames sections of the rugged Te Mata Peak landscape.
